From Depression to Expression: Why Telling Your Truth Beats Chasing Joy

The opposite of Depression, isn’t Happiness.. Its EXPRESSION

We’ve been sold a lie.

Happiness as a destination.

A prize we chase.

A thing we acquire.

It never lasts.

Here’s the deal: Chasing a mood is like sprinting on a treadmill—exhausting but stationary.

You ever get a serious phone call, one of those phone calls..

I hope you never do, but i’ve had quite a few.

Your beloved friend spends 10 minutes telling you story after story to eventually land on

“I just think i’m feeling depressed”

Your knee jerk reaction is some version of “Why aren’t you happy?”

“What would it take to make you happy again?”

“How can I make you happy?”

There’s the lie.

What if we asked the question,

“Why aren’t you expressing?”

Expressing MORE, more than you ever have.

See, expression is different.

It’s not a reward. It’s a release.

A pulse you feel in your chest.

An action you can revel in.

When we speak, write, draw, or move— we’re not hunting joy.

You’re offloading weight. You’re making a dent in the timeline.

Because up until now, you’ve kept silent.

Bathing in your “why me” story.

You’ve probably convinced yourself you’re stranded on an island and right there, is the bottom of the pit.

Please don’t ever let yourself get there.

Decisions born there are desperate.

They’re lonely, short-sighted, self-sabotaging.

Isolation whispers that you “don’t matter”.

That no one sees you.

That you maybe don’t deserve better

But here’s the brutal truth: your doubt ripples outward.

Every unspoken word is a stone thrown into someone else’s pond.

Expression is the antidote to the sickness we call depression.

Sounds like that’d be straight forward right?

Why wouldn’t the opposite of depression be to express?

Your words may shape someone’s day.

Your honesty gives another permission to speak, feel and be understood.

Your story often carries an answer to the reason someone cries themselves to sleep every night.

You hold more influence than you realize.

Every time you share, you crack open a door for someone else.

It’s not a selfish act, it’s selfless.

The late-night text you erased -->

The moment you bury it -->

The moment someone listened.

This is your secret weapon. Your proof that expression matters.

When you express, you break the spell.

Angst becomes art.

Fear becomes voice.

You no longer drift alone.

It’s never about perfect.

It’s about showing up. Making noise. Leaving a trace.

Imagine the weight of silence lifting.

Imagine your story nudging someone else to speak.

Right now, grab a notebook or hit record on your phone.

Spend two minutes unloading one thought you’ve been holding onto.

Send it to someone you trust—or keep it as your first step toward breaking free.

Isn’t that worth more than chasing a fleeting high?
